The opening vocals of the track introduce an indictment of the government, which encourages the youth to submit to its authority (as it does adults). This facade’s keynote message (“Head is the answer/Head is the future”) juxtaposes a dichotomy between body and mind - “head” refers to both oral sex and education. Through interludes of whispers, Kendrick contradicts the outer world’s falsely uplifting facade, highlighting the painfully true, gritty underside of his culture’s ideals. “Untitled 04” introduces the album’s ground situation, as it outlines our broken, corrupt, and tumultuous modern-day society in which Kendrick partakes. The chronological order of studio production, according to the dates of conception attached to the tracks, follows the contour: “Untitled 03,” “Untitled 02,” “Untitled 06,” “Untitled 04,” “Untitled 01,” “Untitled 08,” and the cumulatively created track, “Untitled 07.” A possible order that may be extrapolated from the album, I would argue, in accordance with a plot arc, could interpret “Untitled 04” as its ground situation, “Untitled 05” as its trigger, “Untitled 03,” “Untitled 07,” and “Untitled 02” as its rising actions, “Untitled 01” as its turning point, “Untitled 06” as its primary falling action, and “Untitled 08” as its (ultimately inconclusive) resolution. The fact that these dreamily-produced studio outtakes are organized into a coherent narrative arc suggests that untitled unmastered. Though they appear to form some amorphous cloud of experimental sound at first listen, there is indeed a theme and a message behind these sketches, just as there have been behind the rest of his discography. But, these tracks deserve recognition and analysis as the productive prelude to such a groundbreaking, game-changing work. has been little explored, and has thus carried a mere shadow of the concern and acclaim brought on by the rapper’s previous masterpiece. As a veritable handful of song sketches, the overall content of untitled unmastered.

However, the subsequent demand inspired by these three incredible shows ultimately led to the release of untitled unmastered., a compilation album of eight demos of unused songs from the To Pimp a Butterfly recording sessions. These performances were originally mere speculation - the studio versions were never intended to be released. In the several months following To Pimp a Butterfly’s momentous release, still reeling from his inevitable success and resultant position of reverence in hip hop, Kendrick Lamar used a few live television appearances as an opportunity to perform some unused tracks left over from his legendary concept album.
